"Jean and I would like to thank you for your hospitality and friendship shown to us, we realy appreciated the way in which you treat your guests, the minute I met Grace and Ron I knew that this was the B&B we were looking for. You are are great team working together, and we can both say without a shadow of doubt that our stay with you was the best experience we have ever had in a B&B, not only this, but what a good advert for a Scottish B&B!!! Garry been into your web, what a great job! You have a good gift, all that material, they should put you in charge of the Arbroath tourist information centre. I even came across a building that I visited with my sister in the early sixties called The Elms, at that time it was a children's home for Missionaries Kids, my sister had a friend who lived there and we were invited to visit over a weekend, the manager who runs the centre was called Mr Searle. I had a look for the building when we were in Arbroath, but it was so long ago that I couldn't remember where it was in the town. Well once again a big thank you, we will be back."
Jean and Duncan Black, Scotland

""A 40th birthday gift of a trip to Scotland, my husband and I enjoyed our stay here immensely. Upon arrival Garry, Ron and Grace were sweet to buy my husband a birthday bottle of wine and a card, left in the room, though we've never met previously.... and that was the kind of hospitality offered throughout our stay. Garry has knowledge of local attractions etc beyond compare and if you are unsure of things to do he will offer you lots of ideas. The room was very comfortable and large and fully equipped as home from home, breakfast was excellent, overlooking the sunrise on the sea, and our 'hosts' couldn't do enough to make us welcome and comfortable. We've smiled more in the last week than we have for a long while, and felt so at peace, thanks to the Pattersons and their hard work. We WILL be going back again in the future.""

 Terraced Garden & Picnic Area

This stretch of the east coast is regarded as usually the warmest and driest part in Scotland. Our landscaped terraced garden area is an ideal place to soak up the sun and enjoys lovely views over the Arbroath golf course and the Eastern coastline. Garden Wildlife

Our garden and grounds are a haven for the indigenous wildlife. Our seaview dining area is just one large birdwatching hide. So Ornothologists can get within a few metres of the varied species that visit our home. These include the common Wagtails, Swallows, Starlings and Sparrows, to the more elusive Hawks, Pheasants and Woodpeckers.

Small Bats can also be seen on a beautiful spring or summers night. Our garden pond area also attracts a few species. Dragonflies, Butterflies and Toads live along side our Goldfish and Orfes. On land you will see the Rabbits and Field Mice, who help themselves to the food we put out for the birds. We also have a family of Stoats living on the grounds that can be seen quite often hunting or playing from time to time. And the odd Fox and Hedgehog every so often.

If you are really lucky, you may spot a Red Deer wandering into the vicinity, or some Dolphins or Seals playing off the coast. Swans, Geese, Herons and other coastal birds can also be seen at the Elliot beach reserve on the other side of the golf course. We provide binoculars for guests to use, whether they are watching the golf, boats or wildlife..

"The guest house will always be a special place for us as Stuart proposed to me on the Sunday night in your beautiful garden. We definitely be back for a long weekend in the near future"
Thanks again, Laura & Stuart

And Scottish hospitality at its very best

Throughout history, the Scots have emigrated to other parts of the world. We have accommodated over the years an increasing number of guests researching their family history, or just visiting the area where their relatives were from. And guests with links to the RM Condor Marine Base or further back to the days of the Fleet Air Arm. Also the "Red Lichties", people who were born or lived in the town, before moving to other parts of Britain and the world. As well as in other parts of Scotland and England, we ourselves have relatives in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. The Patterson name is a sept of the Clan Maclaren, and our own family also has blood links with the family names of Sibbald, Brodie, Anderson, Drummond, Wallace and Kelly. Famous names like David Dunbar Buick, who emigrated to America and founded the Buick Car Manufacturing Company. Alexander Shanks, the inventor of the modern day lawnmower. And James Chalmers, who came up with the idea for the adhesive postage stamp, were all born in Arbroath. The world famous Scottish entertainers Sir Harry Lauder and Andy Stewart also lived in Arbroath for some time, as did the Olympic Gold medalist Liz McColgan and renowned artist James Watterson Herald. The Angus and Dundee area has been the birthplace to various innovative individuals including Sir Robert Watson Watt, inventor of the radar. JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Ron "Bon" Scott, the lead singer with the Rock group ACDC. And the Hollywood actors Brian Cox, who has starred in Troy, Braveheart, Rob Roy and The Ring amongst many others. And Ian McDairmid, best known as the Sith Lord Emporer Palpatine in the last 4 Star Wars films. As well as our local knowledge spanning over 60 years, we provide information for our guests about the past history of Arbroath and the other towns and villages of Angus. Local books and videos are available detailing various aspects on the history of the area, and researching family ties. We can point you in the right direction as to where you can gain help and advice on researching your family tree in Angus, in most places for free. With every returning guest, we gain a little more knowledge ourselves about Arbroath's proud heritage.

The free research books and maps we offer cover the histories of Arbroath and the surrounding villages of St Vigeans, Arbirlot, Auchmithie, Carmyllie, Redford, Colliston, Guthrie, Friockheim, Inverkeilor, Barry, Easthaven, Westhaven, Lunan, Farnell, Kinnell, Monikie & Letham. And we also offer extensive details including gravestone inscriptions, photographic books, historical books, street maps and research details on the other towns of Angus. These include Carnoustie, Montrose, Forfar, Edzell, Kirriemuir, Brechin, Monifieth, Broughty Ferry, Glamis, the Angus Glens, Stonehaven and the towns and villages of Kincardineshire. Plus extensive research for the cities of Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and the historic town of St Andrews.

Garry has an interest in the history of the north east cities, towns and villages. Like his father Ron, late grandfather and great grandfather, they have lived in Arbroath all thier lives. Grace has also spent over 40 years in this historic town, running a local Florist business for over 30 years. All can offer sound advice and point you in the right direction as to family history research locations in the North East of Scotland. If you dont have it with you, a laptop is also available for family history researching at our B&B.

View the images below to see what we have on offer for Angus, Dundee Perthshire, Fife and Aberdeenshire family history research visitors.

"Reading your site on the internet, the offer of help in tracing ancestors around Arbroath was the main reason I chose Five Gables. Garry, your  knowledge and encouragement, plus your extensive library of local books, made is possible for us to achieve our aim. We now know and have visited where our ancestors lived, worked and were buried, completing our family tree. What else did we discover? Garry and his family - and the best Guest House ever! My advice, read the whole website, everything promised is there for you"

We also take many of the things on our doorstep for granted, so why not have a look at our Local Attractions page to see information on many of the interesting visitor attractions that our area has to offer.

Disabled Access

WIFI      All Rooms En-suite       Digital TV       DVD Player

Ramp at the entrance for level access
All rooms are on the ground floor
Seaview guest lounge and dining area are on the ground floor
Sloped path leading to all levels of our terraced garden

Having accommodated many guests with disabilities over the years, we know how difficult it is to find suitable accommodation for people with disabilities. Grace and Ron's daughter Susan, has needed a wheelchair all her life, so we try to do that little bit more for our guests who have disabilities. We have created a ramp at the entrance for easier access for wheelchairs. Our spacious seaview dining area and guest lounge are also on the ground floor. We have also created a sloped pathway, leading to the 3 terraced levels of our garden. The path allows any disabled guests or guests who have trouble with steps, access to our garden table area and our garden pond area. The path also makes access easier for guests with pushchairs and golf trolleys.

If You Need A Wheelchair?

For guests who need a wheelchair while on holiday, for any length of time, we can arrange for chairs to be delivered to Five Gables House. We will hand back the wheelchair after your stay. Wheelchairs are free from the Red Cross / British Legion but a small donation of around £5-£15 is usually a nice gesture as chairs need to be maintained. All we need to know is the height and wieght of the person needing the wheelchair and we will do the rest.

All Rooms and Guest Areas Are On The Ground Floor

Seaview Double/Twin Room - The room has wide doors so access is easy into the room and its en-suite. The en-suite has a WC, wash hand basin and a shower area with a power shower. The shower area has been extended but there is a 5 inch step to negotiate into the shower. The room also comes with bedside lamps and remote controls for the TV and DVD player.

Tayview Twin Room - This room has a wide entrance door so no problems with access. The door into the en-suite is smaller, not suitable for wheelchair access. The en-suite has a WC, wash hand basin and a shower area with a power shower. There is a 4 inch step into the showering area. Again the room comes with bedside lamps and remote controls for the TV, DVD and video recorder.

The Family Suite - Consists of 2 rooms, a double bedroom and a separate single bedroom adjoined to it. With its 2 rooms, the suite is ideal for someone who has a carer with them. The entrance door to the suite is wide enough for wheelchair access, as is the interior door into the suites single bedroom. The door into the en-suite is also accessible for wheelchairs. The en-suite has a WC, wash hand basin and a bath with a power shower overhead. Its a standard sized corner bath, so you need to step over to get in. Both the rooms in the family suite have bedside lamps and remote controls for the TV's, DVD players and video recorders.

Economy Single Rooms - Both these rooms are separated from the main guesthouse. The rooms are next door to each other and so are also ideal for someone with a carer. These rooms are not suitable for wheelchair access. There is one 6 inch step to negotiate and the entrance door is quite solid and heavy so bear that in mind. Both rooms are en-suite with a WC, wash hand basin and a power shower. Both showers have a 5 inch step into the shower area. Both rooms come with bedside lamps and remote controls for the TV, VCR and DVD players.

Seaview Dining Area - Easy wheelchair access into our spacious seaview dining area and our guest lounge area. No problems for wheelchairs getting from the guest rooms to the dining/lounge area.

Games Area - Ground floor so no problems with access. Grace and Ron's daughter Susan enjoys a game of darts so there is a dartboard set up lower down to accommodate guests with chairs. The pool table also comes with a cross cue rest for easier play. Bring your own beers!

Garden - We have created a sloped path that zig zags down to each tier of our terraced garden. The path allows assisted access to our garden table area with its seating and garden games table. The path also allows access to our garden pond area with seating and sun loungers.

Car Park - As this is an old golf club, we have a large car park. Guests can park right next to the entrance. Then its just a few metres along a flat surface to the entrance door, up a small ramp. Its a 90 degree turn from the front door into the hall, possible for most wheelchairs. If required, we can also bring your luggage in for you. And if you need a taxi that can accommodate wheelchairs, we can arrange that for you too.

Anything Else - We will try our best to make all of our guests as comfortable as possible. So if you have any concerns whatsoever, give us a call on 01241 871632 and we will see what we can do for you.

Winter Visits - St Andrews Day to Burns Night

The Angus and Dundee area has alot to offer over the winter months, more than you would think. Entertainment at the locals pubs takes place all year round with a few special occasions thrown in too. Most notable are the many Christmas, Hogmany and New Year Parties. Plus the St Andrews Day Celebrations on the 30th of November, where local pubs make all feel welcome. Some of Scotland's historic buildings are free entry over the St Andrews weekend, including the Arbroath Abbey and Abbots House Museum.

And Burns Night, the celebration of our national poet, Rabbie Burns, making the 25th of January another great time to visit the area. Visitors to Scotland have to experience a true Burns Supper. The supper starts with the hosts welcoming speech and the entrance of the haggis, the supper then begins with the loyal toast. The Immortal Memory, Appreciation, Toast to the Lassies, Reply to the Toast to the Lassies, some other toasts and finally some poetry of Robert Burns finish off the ceremony.

The beginning of November see's the return of Bonfire Night on the 5th, with Arbroath Events putting on a nice fireworks display. From mid November, right through until the Christmas we see the start of the many carol concerts & choirs, Christmas Fayres, pantomime and theatrical shows, Christmas Extravaganza's, church events and Santa's Grotto's. Two good events on during these months are the Victorian themed tours of Glamis Castle and the Santa Specials at the Caledonian Railway, where visitors are given a present from Santa along the journey.

After the New Year, all around the country, the January sales start. With some nice shopping in Arbroath and the other local towns, with the tempting Overgate and Wellgate Shopping Centres in Dundee not too far way. For the more adventurous, the winter months are also the start of many sporting activities including fishing off the coastal rocks and cliffs of Arbroath, and the Glenshee Ski Centre just over an hour from Arbroath. Rowanlea Equestrian just 10 minutes away, will also provide winter treks. With some nice wintery walks along the many nature trails and coastal paths. If your a nutter, then you could try the old tradition of the Broughty Ferry New Year Dook. Where many hardy people jump into the icy cold freezing North Sea on New Years Day. And dont forget Valentines Day on the 14th of February, where the town puts on Valentines Specials at the cosy local restaurants and Valentines Parties at the weekend. Dont forget!!

"Five Gables House now open for the festive season on a bed only basis"
24th December to 3rd January
Minimum 3 night stay

(PLEASE NOTE - Seaview guest lounge and dining area will be closed on some days during this period due to private use)
