"We will be coming to your place
every year until the day we die" "Jean and I would like to thank
you for your hospitality and friendship shown to us, we realy appreciated
the way in which you treat your guests, the minute I met Grace and
Ron I knew that this was the B&B we were looking for. You are
are great team working together, and we can both say without a shadow
of doubt that our stay with you was the best experience we have ever
had in a B&B, not only this, but what a good advert for a Scottish
B&B!!! Garry been into your web, what a great job! You have a
good gift, all that material, they should put you in charge of the
Arbroath tourist information centre. I even came across a building
that I visited with my sister in the early sixties called The Elms,
at that time it was a children's home for Missionaries Kids, my sister
had a friend who lived there and we were invited to visit over a weekend,
the manager who runs the centre was called Mr Searle. I had a look
for the building when we were in Arbroath, but it was so long ago
that I couldn't remember where it was in the town. Well once again
a big thank you, we will be back."

And Scottish hospitality at its very best
Throughout history, the Scots have emigrated to other parts of the world. We
have accommodated over the years an increasing number of guests researching
their family history, or just visiting the area where their relatives were from.
And guests with links to the RM Condor Marine Base or further back to the days
of the Fleet Air Arm. Also the "Red Lichties", people who were born or lived
in the town, before moving to other parts of Britain and the world. As well
as in other parts of Scotland and England, we ourselves have relatives in Canada,
Australia, New Zealand and Germany. The Patterson name is a sept of the Clan
Maclaren, and our own family also has blood links with the family names of Sibbald,
Brodie, Anderson, Drummond, Wallace and Kelly. Famous names like David Dunbar
Buick, who emigrated to America and founded the Buick Car Manufacturing Company.
Alexander Shanks, the inventor of the modern day lawnmower. And James Chalmers,
who came up with the idea for the adhesive postage stamp, were all born in Arbroath.
The world famous Scottish entertainers Sir Harry Lauder and Andy Stewart also
lived in Arbroath for some time, as did the Olympic Gold medalist Liz McColgan
and renowned artist James Watterson Herald. The Angus and Dundee area has been
the birthplace to various innovative individuals including Sir Robert Watson
Watt, inventor of the radar. JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Ron "Bon"
Scott, the lead singer with the Rock group ACDC. And the Hollywood actors Brian
Cox, who has starred in Troy, Braveheart, Rob Roy and The Ring amongst many
others. And Ian McDairmid, best known as the Sith Lord Emporer Palpatine in
the last 4 Star Wars films. As well as our local knowledge spanning over 60
years, we provide information for our guests about the past history of Arbroath
and the other towns and villages of Angus. Local books and videos are available
detailing various aspects on the history of the area, and researching family
ties. We can point you in the right direction as to where you can gain help
and advice on researching your family tree in Angus, in most places for free.
With every returning guest, we gain a little more knowledge ourselves about
Arbroath's proud heritage.
The free research books and maps we offer cover the histories of Arbroath and
the surrounding villages of St Vigeans, Arbirlot, Auchmithie, Carmyllie, Redford,
Colliston, Guthrie, Friockheim, Inverkeilor, Barry, Easthaven, Westhaven, Lunan,
Farnell, Kinnell, Monikie & Letham. And we also offer extensive details
including gravestone inscriptions, photographic books, historical books, street
maps and research details on the other towns of Angus. These include Carnoustie,
Montrose, Forfar, Edzell, Kirriemuir, Brechin, Monifieth, Broughty Ferry, Glamis,
the Angus Glens, Stonehaven and the towns and villages of Kincardineshire. Plus
extensive research for the cities of Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and the historic
town of St Andrews.
Garry has an interest in the history of the north east cities, towns and villages.
Like his father Ron, late grandfather and great grandfather, they have lived
in Arbroath all thier lives. Grace has also spent over 40 years in this historic
town, running a local Florist business for over 30 years. All can offer sound
advice and point you in the right direction as to family history research locations
in the North East of Scotland. If you dont have it with you, a laptop is also
available for family history researching at our B&B.
View the images below to see what we have on offer for Angus, Dundee Perthshire,
Fife and Aberdeenshire family history research visitors.

"Reading your site on the internet, the offer
of help in tracing ancestors around Arbroath was the main reason I chose Five
Gables. Garry, your knowledge and encouragement, plus your extensive library
of local books, made is possible for us to achieve our aim. We now know and
have visited where our ancestors lived, worked and were buried, completing our
family tree. What else did we discover? Garry and his family - and the best
Guest House ever! My advice, read the whole website, everything promised is
there for you"
