Craws Nest
Tassie and Maulesbank Trophy
The Craws Nest Tassie and Maulesbank Trophy is an annual golf tournament
held in Carnoustie during September. Its one of the oldest amateur
golf tournaments in Scotland. It was in 1927 when the Tassie started,
to mark the redesign of the course by James Braid. He tightened up
the course and added some 60 bunkers to its layout. The course at
this time was a formidable test of golf, but still not the challenging
monster that we know today. Golfers from all over the world compete
over the week on the Carnoustie Championship Course and the Carnoustie
Burnside Course. Becoming more popular every year and open to anyone
with a fairly good handicap. Anyone interested in playing in this
competition should be warned, advance booking is advised due to its
growing popularity. The appeal of the Tassie is not only because of
its reputation, but also the fact that you can play on the Carnoustie
Championship Course 3 to 4 times over the week, plus a few rounds
on the Carnoustie Burnside Course for as little as £150 to £190. Bearing
in mind that one round on the Carnoustie Championship Course costs
around £100 at any other time. Entries are accepted in January and
places are soon snapped up. To enquire about this tournament call
the Carnoustie Links office on 01241 853789.

British Open Championship
The British Open Championship is the oldest and most famous professional
golf tournament in the world. It all began on the 17th of October
1870 at Prestwick Golf Club, where 8 players challenged for the title
over 3 rounds in one day, on the 12 hole course. The winner that day
with a score of 174 was Scotland's Willie Park senior who narrowly
beat Scotland's Old Tom Morris for the Championship belt. This was
a red leather belt with a silver buckle. There was no prize money
in the first three Opens until 1863 when it was introduced at £10.
Old Tom Morris was the first to win a prize winners purse a year later,
when he won £6, compared to todays winners purse of around £750,000.
His son, Young Tom Morris, who was the youngest winner of any British
Open at 17, won the next year. He was allowed to keep the Championship
Belt for winning the tournament three consecutive times. It was then
replaced by the present trophy, The Golf Champion Trophy, better known
by its popular name of The Claret Jug.
The British Open Championship first came to Carnoustie in 1931, when
it was won by Tommy Armour of the USA. Other Championships at Carnoustie
were in 1937, won by Englands Henry Cotton. In his one and only British
Open appearance, the USA's legend Ben Hogan won at the next British
Open at Carnoustie in 1953. It was then won by South Africa's Gary
Player in 1968 and Tom Watson from the USA in 1975. Scotland's Paul
Lawrie was the next to win at Carnoustie in 1999, when the tough course
was nicknamed "Carnasty" by a few of the players. And the
last Open at Carnoustie in 2007, one of the best in recent years,
was won by Ireland's Padraig Harrington. The British Open returns
to Scotland in 2010 when comes back home to St Andrews.

Tartan Week Golf Tournament
in April
Scotland's Tartan Day, the domestic celebration of Scotland, Scottish
heritage and Scotlands contribution to the world. It is marked
every year on the 6th of April, the date that the Declaration of Arbroath
was signed at the Arbroath Abbey in 1320, by King Robert the Bruce
and the Nobles of Scotland. This document is considered to be the
most famous document in Scottish history. It was the Canadians who
first started celebrating thier Scottish links on the 6th of April,
with the Americans formally starting Tartan Day when they began celebrating
their Scottish roots and ancestry in 1998. This is when the Senate
passed a resolution to annually celebrate Tartan Day on the 6th of
April. The Declaration is also widely recognised as the basis from
which Americas Declaration of Independence was written. The
Tartan Day International Golf Challenge is a four day challenge match
involving Scottish and overseas business leaders who test their skills
at four of Scotlands best courses. These are the Montrose, Gleneagles,
Carnoustie Championship and St Andrews Old Course.
Tartan Week Events
Many other events take place surrounding the week of the 6th of April.
The main event is the 5 day re-enactment by the Arbroath Abbey Pageant
Society, of the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath, as well as
other important moments from Scottish history. Other events in Arbroath
and the surrounding area include a Grand Ceilidh, Taste of Tartan
Concert, Street Football, Dine Out With The King Evening, Local Pipe
Bands, Declaration of Rock Concert, Highland Dancing, Farmers Market,
Tartan Craft Fayre, Haggis Hurling, Tartan 10km Road Race, Skate Jam
