Five Gables House
The clubhouse for the old Arbroath Golf Club

Literally at the bottom of our garden lies the 1st tee and 18th green of the Arbroath Links golf course. The course was first designed in 1877 by Old Tom Morris, with the first match held on the 9th of March 1878 by Tom Morris and another great pro in his day, Rob Dow. More land was purchased in 1907 so British Open champion Willie Fernie was appointed to redesign the course. The course was then re-designed by five times British Open champion James Braid in 1931, and has hardly changed since. Its no doubt that both Willie Fernie and James Braid would have walked the hallways of this old golf clubhouse when they were re-designing the course, as well as had a nip or two or three in the seaview lounge/bar area of the club, where our guests today have thier breakfast.

More recently, we accommodated some family members of Ian Poulter during the 2007 British Open Championship at Carnoustie. His caddie Terry also stayed with us during that amazing week of golf.

Arbroath Golf Course - Par 70, 6185 Yard Links Course

"A James Braid Links"
"Hosted The Scottish Boys Strokeplay Championship"

The Arbroath Links golf course is a challenging, good quality 18 hole course, well looked after by its greenkeeping staff, especially the greens which are always in excellent condition. The course is an excellent example of links golf with the slight change in wind direction adding to the 72 bunkers and undulating greens that you encounter to test your ability. The Arbroath Artizan Golf Clubhouse just 50 metres away has full catering facilities and a spacious bar, so its not far to walk back to the B&B. The club have fully equipped changing facilities including a locker room and showers. The course also has a practice area and putting green, and a new 10 bay driving range. Just next to the 1st tee is the local professionals shop. Lindsay Ewart and his staff offers the best of service along with club hire, trolley hire, golf buggy hire, tuition and the latest golfing supplies.

Five Gables House
The Golf Clubhouse For The Arbroath Golf Club - 1877 to 1984

"My doctor advised me to give up golf. There is nothing wrong, he just saw my last scorecard"

Although golf was played in Arbroath since 1826, it was not until 1877 that a golf club was established in Arbroath. The original golf course started at Tutties Neuk, a popular local pub still in use today. It was in 1877 when James William Ramsay, 14th Earl of Dalhousie, granted the use of the links as a golf course which was inspected and laid out under the supervision of Tom Morris. The Earl of Dalhousie was the patron of this club from its commencement until his death in November 1887.

The Arbroath Golf Club was formed in 1877, the only club using the course at this time. Some money was raised, land was bought and the clubhouse was built in 1903. This was the same year the Arbroath Artisan Golf Club was formed, the only club using the course today. Both clubs used the same course until 1984 when the Arbroath Golf Club closed. The Arbroath clubs closure was due to the construction of a new club, a few miles from Arbroath. Ron was a member of both the Arbroath golf clubs and is now a member of the Arbroath Artisan Golf Club.

Five Gables House B&B - 1996 to Today

We still have a few souvenirs dotted around reminding us of its former use. The original Arbroath Golf Club Captains Board in our hall is the first reminder. Along with images of the clubhouse opening on the 19th of August 1903. Also in the hallway you will find an ariel image of the club and grounds in the 1970's, and a beautiful print from local artist Sheena Christie of the clubhouse in the 80's. These are displayed along with old maps of Arbroath and the Angus area, and images from Ron's old Merchant Navy days. We have both the mens and womens clubs centenary flags (1877-1977) and the clubs old Rules Of Golf book. Through the hall takes you to the guest lounge and dining area thats looks out over the golf course and the North Sea. This is where the Bar & Lounge used to be in the old golf club.

Outside the building is still pretty much the way it was, this includes the old greenkeepers/golf trolley sheds with the concrete trolley steps to the side. The older original wooden trolley steps are also visible, but have weathered over the last 100 years. With the clubs old well also still found on the site. The garden is the only major change, with the three sets of stone steps that led to the course, the only original part remaining. The views have remained the same over the last century.

We have accommodated many guests over the years that were either members of this club, or thier parents or grandparents were members. The links with the original Arbroath Golf Club stretch as far as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and America. We would love to hear more about your old memories or childhood stories on this old golf club. We learn something new about our home with every passing year.

Carnoustie

Carnoustie Championship Golf Course
Carnoustie Burnside Golf Course
Carnoustie Buddon Golf Course
(under 10 minutes from Arbroath)

"The 2007 British Open Venue"

Carnoustie, just 5 miles away has 3 courses. The Buddon Course, Burnside Course and the famous Championship Course, the venue for the British Open Championships in 1931, 1936, 1953, 1968, 1975, 1999 and again in 2007. The 2007 Championship was regarded as one of the best in recent years. Winners at Carnoustie include Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Paul Lawrie and Padriag Harrington in 2007. Carnoustie is regarded by many including Tiger Woods, to be the "best if not the most demanding links course in the world". Its 18th hole has recently been included in the 100 most difficult holes to play in the world.

The course is also one of the three venues for the Dunhill Links Pro/Am Tournament, held every year in October. This is when the worlds best golfers, along with Hollywood actors and sporting heroes, compete for the Dunhill Links trophy. The nearby Burnside course is regarded by locals and visitors as a hidden gem, overshadowed by its Championship neighbour. For this reason its a good one to add to the list while golfing in the area. A round on the challenging Buddon Course completes the Carnoustie circuit.

"Thanks Ron, Grace & Garry for your friendly, sincere hospitality, it was a visit to remember. The Open was not bad either"
Laura Traynor, Alliston, Ontario, Canada

Letham Grange

Letham Grange Old Course
Letham Grange Glens Course
(under 10 minutes from Arbroath)

"The Hidden Gem Of Angus"

Letham Grange has 2 golf courses set in attractive woodland just 3 miles from Arbroath. The main course was opened in 1987 by Sir Henry Cotton and is widely acclaimed as one of the premier courses in Scotland. The host to the BBC "Play Better Golf" series, Peter Allis described the par 73 Old Course as one of the top inland courses in the UK. While renowned golf course photographer Brian Morgan added that several holes at Letham Grange would not be out of place at Augusta National. Its shorter par 68 Glens Course is also making a name for itself as a challenging round of golf.

In 2007, a Bunkered Golf Magazine survey found the Letham Grange Old Course to be the 18th best course in Scotland, just behind the St Andrews Old Course at number 17. Thats out of around 500 golf courses in Scotland. The Old Course at Letham Grange is the perfect example of a hidden gem, and should be on the list when golfing in the area.

St. Andrews

St Andrews Old Course
(30 minutes from Arbroath)

"The Birthplace Of Golf"

"The Old Course at St Andrews originally comprised of 22 holes"

"The Open Championship was first played on St Andrews Old Course in 1873"

There are dozens of good quality golf courses within a few miles of Five Gables House. Don't forget also that St Andrews, the Home Of Golf is only a 30 minute drive from Arbroath. The St Andrews Links comprises of seven public courses, including the world famous Old Course. Tiger Woods said of the Old Course "Without a doubt, I like it the best of all the Open venues. Its my favourite course in the world". And the legend that is Jack Nicklaus stated " I fell in love with it the first day I played it". The other courses include the New, Jubilee, Eden, Strathtyrum, Balgove and the new Castle Course which opened in 2007.

The Old Course is immensely popular and sustains 42,000 rounds of golf per year. As a result of this high demand, special conditions apply to booking. No advance bookings can be made for play on Saturdays. Over 50% of all starting times on the Old Course each year are put into the daily ballot, which is drawn every day for the next days play. Montrose

Montrose Medal Golf Course
Montrose Broomfield Golf Course
(15 minutes from Arbroath)

"The 5th Oldest Golf Course In The World"

The Mostrose Medal Golf Course is one of the oldest courses in the world. Golf has been played here for over 400 years. The Medal Course at Montrose is a majestic layout in the true traditions of Scottish Links golf and has hosted many important events in its history including the Scottish Professional Championship in 1967 and 1970, the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1975 and the British Boys Championship and Internationals in 1991. Because of all these factors the Links was honoured by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in being chosen as a final qualifying course for the British Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007.

The Broomfield course was originally a 9 hole course but extended to 18 holes in 1915. The Broomfield offers families, juniors and beginners the opportunity to enjoy golf on the links at Montrose. Because of the flat nature of the course its ideal for beginners or for perfecting your game before taking on the challenge of the Medal Course. The Broomfield Course does not require long carries from the tee, but to find the small greens accurate approach shots are a must. A shorter course can be played on the Broomfield for juvenile beginners on the first seven holes, these holes are designated by black tees. The total length of the Wee Broomie is 910 yards.

Montrose Medal Course Comments

"This is defintely a course worth playing. Friendly staff and not so crowded course. Great mixture between long and short holes. All together a well kept course"
Jens Vagland

"It was an absolutely excellent course with rolling fairways and lovely greens. Holes 2, 3 and 4 are superb together with testing par 3 16th hole, usually against the wind. I would recommend Montrose to anyone, particularly if you like links courses. Make the effort and get up there"

Forfar

Forfar Golf Course
(15 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded In 1871"

With its wooded heathland course, Forfar Golf Club was founded in 1871 and is located just 15 minutes drive from Five Gables House. The original course was laid out by four time Open Champion Old Tom Morris of St Andrews in 1871 with alterations being made in 1926 by James Braid. One of the most difficult holes is undoubtedly the 12th, a 444 yard par 4, but the 412 yard 15th is suitably named "Braids Best" after the five time Open Champion. Although this is an inland course the tight undulating heathland fairways combined with a classical layout creates conditions similar to links golf. Forfar Golf Course is found just 15 minutes from Arbroath.

Panmure

Panmure Golf Course
(10 minutes from Arbroath)

"British Open Qualifier Course"

The Panmure Golf Course, a stunning links course and one of the qualifiers for the British Open when it visits Carnoustie. Although a form of golf is known to have been played on the links of Barry since around the end of 15th century, the more formal layout dates back to the late 1890s when the club moved to its present location. Old Tom Morris is believed to have had a hand in the design of the original course. The present layout owes much to the influence of James Braid. In 1922, the five times winner of the British Open was consulted by the club to engineer a tougher course.

2007 saw some great golf played at Panmure during the qualifying for The Open at Carnoustie. Although no player broke the course record of 65. In 2008, Panmure hosted the Girls International Matches, a Championship that brought together the cream of under 18 golfers from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Visitors are most welcome at any time except on a Tuesday before 1.00pm and on a Saturday before 3.00pm. We recommend visitors check availability with the Professional or the Secretary's office in advance. Contact details can be found below.

Kirriemuir

Kirriemuir Golf Course
(20 minutes from Arbroath)
"A Heathland Gem"

Kirriemuir offers an admirable and highly enjoyable heathland/parkland layout, the perfect length for the entire day’s golf. Avenues of woods, gorse and broom surround lush, undulating fairways with greens that are impeccable and true. Like many of the great courses, Kirriemuir’s best is reserved for the finish. The 17th and 18th are two fantastic holes. The 17th a 180 yard, par 3 which is guarded by two majestic trees both left and right, this hole lives up to its name “Braids Gem”. The 18th is a difficult par 4, it is uphill with a large oak tree blocking the right half of the fairway. The approach shot must either be carried over the large bunkered gully or laid up short of this troublesome hazard. The Kirriemuir Golf Course is located 20 to 25 minutes drive from Arbroath.

The 6655 yard, par 71 links Medal course has recently undergone a 3 year recovery programme under the head greenkeeper Scott Rennie and is in excellent condition with well grassed narrow running fairways, lush semi-rough, penal heavy rough and fast consistent greens not to mention the deep revetted bunkers to test any standard of golfer. While its neighbour the 5123 yard, par 68 Ashludie course offers a compact and challenging test of golf. Downfield

Downfield Golf Course
(20 minutes from Arbroath)

"British Open Qualifier Course"

Downfield is recognised as one of the finest inland courses in Scotland. It has played host to many events over its long history. In the past tournaments like the S.P.G.A. Masters, Scottish Boys Stroke Play, P.G.A. Scottish Open, Scottish Amateur, British Girls Home Internationals, but it was the great honour of being a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007 that has put Downfield Golf Club rightly, near the top of the tree as a golfing destination. Set in beautiful parkland, the course is a challenge to every golfer teeing off at the wonderful 1st hole and moving round the rolling contours of the course. The wildlife on the course is breathtaking with foxes, squirrels, deer, water fowl, ducks and buzzards, as well as many other interesting species scampering around. The Downfield course is located just 20 minutes from Arbroath.

Caird Park Golf Course
(20 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded In 1923"

Caird Park golf course is set in extensive parkland on the northern outskirts of Dundee close to the city centre and is a testing 6280 yard, par 72 course for golfers who wish to refresh their style of play and enjoy a relaxing game. A reasonably easy start belies the difficulty of the middle section holes 7 to 13. The 243-yard 12th hole is a particular test whilst the back 9 crosses the Gelly burn four times. Caird Park finishes well and adds up to an enjoyable round. Golf writer and former editor of Scottish Golf Martin Vousden writes, "Set in parkland with mature trees Caird Park is an enjoyable layout. The course has some excellent holes, particularly around the turn where play involves criss-crossing the Gelly burn.”

Caird Park also boasts a testing 9 hole course surrounding the historic 16th century Mains Castle. Caird Park is located just 20 minutes from Arbroath.

Ballumbie Castle

Ballumbie Castle Golf Course
(20 minutes from Arbroath)

"Amidst The Ruins Of Ballumbie"

This golf courses terrain sweeps and turns with no two holes the same. Most clubs in the bag will be used but not necessarily a driver off every tee, especially for the first six holes of the course where position is more important than distance. The most difficult stretch of the course starts at the 10th, a par four with a burn running next to the fairway and a sloping bank to the right, as well as a pond to the left of the green. It is followed by a 210-yard par three, then another par three at only 143 yards over a pond. This fairly new course, Ballumbie Castle is a welcome addition to the golfing scene in the area, one to tick off the list while your in the area. St Michaels Golf Course / Drumoig Golf Course

St Michael's Golf Course
(30 minutes from Arbroath)

"Heathland Course"

St Michael's Golf Club is a par 70, 5563 yard heathland course, found just over the Tay Bridge near Leuchars. A nice location giving great views over the town and bay of St Andrews. St Michaels might not be St Andrews, but it is a beautiful course in its own right. St Michael's Golf Club sits on a prehistoric settlement that is protected by Historic Scotland. The challenges start on hole 1, a tricky 415 yard par 4. The length is deceptive, because it's uphill. Aim left of center onto a wide landing area. Your second shot should head right, because over the ridge, the fairway is sloped right to left. The terrain consists of rolling parkland which makes St Michael's a distinctly unique test of golf. The short 15th, known as "St Miles", is considered by many to be one of the most picturesque and demanding short holes in Fife.

Visitors are welcome at St Michael's Golf Club Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm. Call ahead for availability on Saturdays and Sundays.

Drumoig Golf Course
(30 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded in 1996"

Drumoig Golf Course is a privately owned course found just over the Tay Bridge. Its set amongst 250 acres with its own championship style golf course. Playing Drumoig Golf Course is an adventure, measuring 6835 yards and with a par of 72, it combines a number of natural features, such as the old quarries surrounding the 5th and 13th greens and the specially created lochs forming boundaries to the 9th and 10th fairways. The course weaves through a natural bird and wildlife haven. Water comes into play on 3 holes, with two greens nestling in the old quarries. Each hole offers an array of unique features. With a choice of tees to play from, the yellow tee is for the most adventurous golfers, the green tee for intermediate golfers and the red tee, long or short, for the lady golfers.

Alyth & Blairgowrie

Alyth Golf Course
(30 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded In 1894"

An 18-hole 6259 yard heathland course, Alyth Golf Club was established in 1894. The original 9 holes were designed by the master Old Tom Morris of St Andrews with James Braid completing the extension in 1934. Playing the course demands constant attention as a combination of tree lined fairways and diverse rolling terrain make the emphasis on precision golf rather than distance, although both are required. Alyth's most demanding aspect however, might be its tranquil setting. Within the pines, silver birch and heather and overlooking the nearby hills, it is easy to lose yourself in the joys of a good game of golf. A round of golf at Alyth is usually a challenge to any golfer, no matter his or her handicap. The fairways in general are wide and receptive whilst the greens are possibly larger than on most courses.

Kittocks Golf Course / Torrance Golf Course

Kittocks Golf Course
(35 minutes from Arbroath)

"Bruce Devlin design"

Designed by Australian Open winner Bruce Devlin, the course opened in 2002. 6 years later the course was modified again by Gary Stephenson to make it more challanging. Bruce Devlin's experience and expertise have provided the Kittocks with its innovative and exciting character. It is a truly magnificent 72 par, 7049 yard championship course that sweeps its way along the rugged landscape. This gem begins by innocently easing the golfer into a false sense of security, offering wide, well manicured fairways that winds around man made water features and risky bunkers, teasing the golfer with a mix of par fours and fives. Renamed the Kittocks, this new name is taken from the area of land on the course that is inhabited by a family of deer.

Torrance Golf Course
(35 minutes from Arbroath)

"British Open Qualifier"

The Torrance Course was designed by Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance and opened in 2001. It sits on the braes above the town of St Andrews with fantastic views across St Andrews Bay. The course has held several events including the Scottish Seniors Open and is a qualifying course for the 2010 Open Championship. Newly revamped thanks to a redesign that has taken four holes from the Kittocks course and replaced some tees and bunkers. The 16th and 17th are highlights that make the most of their clifftop location. "Sam's favourite", the par 4 17th signature hole, is just one of many excellent golf holes on a very well laid out course.

"Oldest 9 Hole Golf Club In The World"

The Club was founded on the 7th November 1855, Fife's Cupar Golf Club is rich with history and believed to be the oldest 9 hole club in the world. Cupar's nine holes will entertain players of all abilities. This hillside parkland course was first played in 1892 and is mature and well tended. Small greens cut into the hillside are in excellent condition. At 5153 yards from the medal tees, the longest hole is 417 yards. Most regular players have a good chance of scoring below 80. The last hole is a short par 4 within driving range to a green in front of the clubhouse. A great birdie chance that has provided members at the 19th with much drama and amusement through the years.

King James VI Golf Course / Craigie Hill Golf Course

King James VI Golf Course
(40 minutes from Arbroath)

"The Island Golf Course"

Scotland's only self contained river island golf course, King James VI Golf Club offers a beautiful but challenging environment for both novices and advanced players alike. Founded in 1858 nearby at Perth's South Inch, then relocated to Moncrieffe Island, elsewhere in Perth, in 1897. A purpose built golf course designed by 'Old' Tom Morris, the legendary winner of multiple British Open Golf Championships. Nowadays the golf course is a popular destination for locals and visiting players. There are 18 holes with a wide variety of trees bordering the fairways. It is also unique as it is situated on an island in the river Tay, but the water is not always obvious, as trees line many of the banks. A hook at several holes will, however, almost certainly risk going out of bounds to join a huge collection of balls in a watery grave!

Strathmore & Murrayshall

Strathmore Rannaleroch Golf Course
(30 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded In 1996"

Set in the heart of the Strathmore valley, Strathmore offers the 18 hole Rannaleroch Course and the 9-hole Leitfie Links. The par 72, 6454 yard Rannaleroch course has generous fairways, rolling greens and is a challenge to good golfers. Designed by John Salvesen, the Rannaleroch course has already been described as a classic. The generous greens are great targets, but their undulations make holing out a greater challenge than you might expect. The four par 3's each present an individual challenge, ranging from 122 to 224 yards, while the fifth, a challenging par 5, requires a 160 yard carry over water from the white tees. Set in undulating parkland with hundreds of mature trees, the Rannaleroch Course is forgiving of inexperience, yet presents a stern test of golf from the white tees for low handicappers. Strathmore also have the 9 hole Leitfie Links, this is ideal for beginners or for a quick round if you are short for time.

Murrayshall Championship Golf Course
Murrayshall Lynedoch Golf Course
(40 minutes from Arbroath)

"Scottish Youth Championship Venue"

Situated a few miles from Perth, the Murrayshall Championship Course hosted the 2002 Scottish Youth Championships. Measuring 6441 yards, the championship course lies on 350 acres of rolling parkland. The course was designed by Hamilton J. Stutt, the grandson of the great James Braid's chief foreman. With tree lined fairways, accuracy is key to a good score on this par 73 course. Large white sand bunkers protect expansive but tricky greens. Natural stone bridges span water hazards which will test the accuracy of your iron play. The course is home to the PGA under 25 Championship and the Scottish Team Championship.

The Lynedoch Course is a par 69 course, like the Murrayshall Course, was designed by Hamilton J. Stutt. At 5400 yards, the Lynedoch still provides an exciting round of golf. Running through Scots Pine woodland and wildflower meadows the undulating fairways lead up to large testing greens. Water hazards and Bracken provide ample protection and will catch any errant golf balls.

Dukes Golf Course

"HRH Prince Andrew's Course"

The Dukes Golf Course, 2 miles from St Andrews is now on many golfers must play lists. Opened in 1995 and designed by 5 times Open Champion, Peter Thomson, the course was re-designed in 2007 by the U.S. based Kohler Company. Today, The Duke's is a heathland masterpiece. Gone are the revet-faced pot bunkers and in are rough-edged spacious bunkers synonymous with bygone years of heathland golf. With the conditioning of this par 72, 6749 yard course comparable with some of the finest clubs in the land, and the friendly atmosphere and welcome afforded in the luxurious clubhouse, a visit to The Duke's is highly recommended. The course hosted the Scottish Amateur Championship in 2003. Affectionately known by club members and locals as The Duke’s, not least because the HRH The Duke of York played the inaugural tee shot. Its the only heathland golf course in St Andrews.

Stonehaven Golf Course / Portlethen Golf Course

Stonehaven Golf Course
(40 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded In 1888"

Stonehaven Golf Club was founded in 1888, and the first clubhouse was opened in 1889. The original chimney stack still stands by the 15th tee. At that time, the course had ten holes, reduced to nine a year later, and it was not until July 7, 1897 , that the “new” course and clubhouse on the present site was opened. For a short time, the professional was George Duncan, who later won the Open Championship in 1920 and who played in a winning Ryder Cup team. Also to grace the fairways was another Open champion, the legendary James Braid, who played a challenge match on August 18, 1906 , against Archie Simpson, the professional at Royal Aberdeen. Afterwards, Braid and Simpson planned improvements to the course.

A much less welcome visitor called in August, 1940, when a German aircraft, dropped a bomb on the course only a hundred yards or so from the clubhouse. The crater it left, known as Hitler’s Bunker, remains clearly visible today and very much in play between the first and second fairways.

Portlethen Golf Course
(55 minutes from Arbroath)

"Founded in 1981"

The Portlethen Golf Course is found between Stonehaven and Aberdeen, just under an hour from Arbroath. This parkland course is blessed with some nice natural features. The Findon burn which, lined with mature broadleaf trees, crosses five of the holes on the first nine influencing either tee or approach shots. The par 5 485 yard fourth hole poses a problem of choice of second shots as the burn crosses 90 yards short of the green. The inward 9 holes carry fewer hazards but the Findon burn continues to create problems at the fifteenth and eighteenth. Arguably the fifteenth is the 'signature hole' of the course. First, the tee shot has to be accurate to cope with the right to left dog leg and then the approach shot, from a down hill lie, has to carry the Findon burn which, moat like, guards the entrance to the green. There is an extensive practice area and the putting green is situated near the first tee.

Banchory & Peterculter

Banchory Golf Course
(50 minutes from Arbroath)

"Paul Lawrie's Course"

Founded in 1905, Banchory golf course has recently been extensively remodelled by renowned Scottish golf course architect John Souter. Set above the bonnie banks of the River Dee, the picturesque par 69, 18 hole golf course layout offers a challenge to golfers of all standards. Though not over long at 5801 yards, don't be fooled. Strategically placed bunkers, mature native trees and the "magnetic" River Dee provide obstacles that can test even the most accomplished player. From one of the shortest holes in Scottish golf, the 88 yards "Doocot", to some of the most testing long holes, Banchory Golf Course is an enjoyable experience.

Harry Bannerman who was part of the Ryder Cup Team in 1971 was golf pro at
Banchory from 1971-1974. The 1999 British Open winner Paul Lawrie was also Assistant pro here between 1986-1990.

Hazlehead Golf Course / Balnagask Golf Course

Hazlehead Golf Course
(60 minutes from Arbroath)

"Alistair McKenzie design"

Hazlehead Golf course was designed by Alistair McKenzie, the golf architect better known for designing Augusta National in America. This 18 hole, 6224 yard, par 70 course provides a true test of golf skills with gorse and woodland being a hazard for any wayward shots. Several well known competitions are held here on a regular basis. Hazleheads other golf course, originally a 9 hole course, it gained an extension in the early 1970's which was also designed by Hugget, Coles and Dyer. This 18 hole, 5764 yard, par 67 course has a more open aspect than the main course and its beautiful setting is perhaps more suitable for higher handicap players.

Craws Nest Tassie and Maulesbank Trophy

The Craws Nest Tassie and Maulesbank Trophy is an annual golf tournament held in Carnoustie during September. Its one of the oldest amateur golf tournaments in Scotland. It was in 1927 when the Tassie started, to mark the redesign of the course by James Braid. He tightened up the course and added some 60 bunkers to its layout. The course at this time was a formidable test of golf, but still not the challenging monster that we know today. Golfers from all over the world compete over the week on the Carnoustie Championship Course and the Carnoustie Burnside Course. Becoming more popular every year and open to anyone with a fairly good handicap. Anyone interested in playing in this competition should be warned, advance booking is advised due to its growing popularity. The appeal of the Tassie is not only because of its reputation, but also the fact that you can play on the Carnoustie Championship Course 3 to 4 times over the week, plus a few rounds on the Carnoustie Burnside Course for as little as £150 to £190. Bearing in mind that one round on the Carnoustie Championship Course costs around £100 at any other time. Entries are accepted in January and places are soon snapped up. To enquire about this tournament call the Carnoustie Links office on 01241 853789.

British Open Championship

The British Open Championship is the oldest and most famous professional golf tournament in the world. It all began on the 17th of October 1870 at Prestwick Golf Club, where 8 players challenged for the title over 3 rounds in one day, on the 12 hole course. The winner that day with a score of 174 was Scotland's Willie Park senior who narrowly beat Scotland's Old Tom Morris for the Championship belt. This was a red leather belt with a silver buckle. There was no prize money in the first three Opens until 1863 when it was introduced at £10. Old Tom Morris was the first to win a prize winners purse a year later, when he won £6, compared to todays winners purse of around £750,000. His son, Young Tom Morris, who was the youngest winner of any British Open at 17, won the next year. He was allowed to keep the Championship Belt for winning the tournament three consecutive times. It was then replaced by the present trophy, The Golf Champion Trophy, better known by its popular name of The Claret Jug.

The British Open Championship first came to Carnoustie in 1931, when it was won by Tommy Armour of the USA. Other Championships at Carnoustie were in 1937, won by Englands Henry Cotton. In his one and only British Open appearance, the USA's legend Ben Hogan won at the next British Open at Carnoustie in 1953. It was then won by South Africa's Gary Player in 1968 and Tom Watson from the USA in 1975. Scotland's Paul Lawrie was the next to win at Carnoustie in 1999, when the tough course was nicknamed "Carnasty" by a few of the players. And the last Open at Carnoustie in 2007, one of the best in recent years, was won by Ireland's Padraig Harrington. The British Open returns to Scotland in 2010 when comes back home to St Andrews.

The 2010 Open Champions Challenge

The Open Champions Challenge was first introduced on the eve of the 2000 British Open Championship at St Andrews, and was graced by all 22 living former British Open Champions, including the 88 year old Slammin Sam Snead. The challenge was played over the 1st, 2nd, 17th and 18th holes of the St Andrews Old Course. That year saw the title go to the threeball of Tom Weiskopf, Tom Lehman and Paul Lawrie, raising £40,000 for charity.

The Open Champions Challenge returns for the second time in 2010, again on the eve of the British Open, and again at the home of golf St Andrews. The former Champions invited to the 2010 event are Peter Thompson, Gary Player, Kel Nagle, Arnold Palmer, Bob Charles, Jack Nickaus, Roberto de Vicenzo, Tony Jacklin, Lee Trevino, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Seve Ballesteros, Bill Rogers, Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Mark Calcavecchia, Ian Baker Finch, Nick Price, John Daly, Tom Lehman, Justin Leonard, Mark O'Meara, Paul Lawrie, Tiger Woods, David Duval, Ernie Els, Ben Curtis, Todd Hamilton, Padraig Harrington and Stewart Cink.

The success of the event in 2000, bodes well for another fantastic tournamnent in 2010. One of the memorable highlights of 2000 was Sam Snead's soft shoe shuffle on the Swilkan Bridge. Again the prize money will be donated to the winners chosen charity.

Sam Snead won a record 82 PGA Tour events. He won seven majors, including three Masters, three PGA Championships and one British Open Championship
Slammin Sam Snead, at 88 years old he was the oldest competitor of the 2000 Open Champions Challenge. Sam won the 1946 British Open Championship at St Andrews. When passing by the Old Course on the train before the event, he famously stated " That looks like an old, abandoned golf course".

2009 World International Pairs Tournament

2009 World International Pairs Tournament
Held at the Carnoustie Championship & Monifieth Medal Golf Courses

The inaugural International Pairs World Final took place in 2004 and marked a massive step forward in the development of the tournament from a primarily UK event to a truly worldwide competition. The national champions from each participating country now come together on an annual basis to decide which of them can rightfully claim to be the best in the world and get their hands on the Honey Cup, the only trophy ever to be designed by the world famous golf artist Graeme Baxter.

The International Pairs World Final 2009 took place from Saturday 10th to Tuesday 13th October at Monifieth Medal Golf Course and the Carnoustie Championship Golf Course in Angus, Scotland. With the National Champions of all participating nations represented in this 36 hole competition. The play started with a practice round on the Monifieth Medal Course, playing the same course the next day for the first round. The final round was played on the Carnoustie Championship Golf Course the following day.

Canadian teenagers Marilyne Cadieux and Saby Dagenais scored a victory for lady golfers all over the world by becoming the first ever women to win the International Pairs World Final 2009 at Carnoustie. 19 year old Marilyne, and 17 year old Saby, claimed their own special place in the global competitions history by beating 27 other pairs, including 25 all male partnerships, to be crowned world champions in this event.

Competitors from countries including Britain, America, South Africa, Nigeria, Spain and, making their debut, Antigua, paraded around Carnoustie in a torchlight procession led by the Carnoustie Pipe Band as part of a spectacular opening ceremony which involved children from across the Angus region. Players, family and friends were also treated to an evening in St Andrews while the Provost of Angus Ruth Leslie Melville was on hand to formally open and close the proceedings.

And the 2009 finals was also memorable for Irish 12 handicapper Joe McDonald as he hit his first ever hole in one on the 191 yard, par 3 fifth hole at Monifieth, only the second time it has happened in the history of the competition.

2009 International Pairs World Final Results

1 Marilyne Cadieux and Saby Dagenais (Canada) - 83 points
2 Manfred van der Wall and Rob Bosman (Netherlands) - 80 points
3 John Maxwell and Steven Hunter (Scotland) - 78 points

2011 Rioch Womens British Open Championship

Held at Carnoustie Championship Golf Course, 26th July to 29th July 2011

The first Womens British Open, then named the Ladies' British Open, was the flagship event of the Ladies Golf Union and was played at Fulford in Yorkshire. At a time when there were just a handful of British women professional golfers, the Championship was won by the Amateur Jenny Lee-Smith. The following year Vivien Sauders became the first professional to win the Championship which was played at Lindrick.

In 2002 Karrie Webb became the first player to win the title three times when she came from three strokes behind to clinch victory with a flawless final round 66 over the Ailsa Course at Turnberry and become the first player to win the Super Career Grand Slam of victories in five different Major Championships.

The 2007 Ricoh Womens British Open made history by becoming the first ever professional womens tournament to be played at the Home of Golf. Mexico's Lorena Ochoa was victorious at the Old Course at St Andrews, winning her first major title by four shots over joint runners up, Jee Young Lee of Korea and Sweden's Maria Hjorth. In 2013, the tournament returns to the hallowed turf of the St Andrews Old Course.

2011 will see the championship held for the first time on the Carnoustie Championship Golf Course, with the first round played on Tuesday the 26th of July. The qualifier rounds will be played on the Panmure Golf Links just prior to the event.

A New Golf Course For The Disabled

The Hermitage Educational Company Ltd is a registered Charity formed in June 2000 for the specific purpose of promoting, constructing and maintaining the children and disabled persons golf course constructed at the Braid Hills Drive in Edinburgh. The project to develop a children and disabled persons golf course in Edinburgh began some years ago when members of the Hermitage Educational Committee concluded that there was a need for a golf facility in Edinburgh.

The project, called 'GO SWING', is supported by Sport Scotland, Edinburgh Council, the R&A and the Scottish Golf Union. Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart also agreed to be the project Patron. The committee are delighted that a player of Andrew's international calibre and profile has agreed to support the very worthy project to offer young children and the disabled the opportunity to play golf.

Tartan Week Golf Tournament in April

Tartan Week Golf Tournament in April

Scotland's Tartan Day, the domestic celebration of Scotland, Scottish heritage and Scotlands contribution to the world. This is marked every year on the 6th of April, the date that the Declaration of Arbroath was signed at the Arbroath Abbey in 1320, by King Robert the Bruce and the Nobles of Scotland. This document is considered to be the most famous document in Scottish history.

It was the Canadians who first started celebrating thier Scottish links on the 6th of April, with the Americans formally starting Tartan Day when they began celebrating their Scottish roots and ancestry in 1998. This is when the Senate passed a resolution to annually celebrate Tartan Day on the 6th of April. The Declaration is also widely recognised as the basis from which Americas Declaration of Independence was written. The Tartan Day International Golf Challenge is a four day challenge match involving Scottish and overseas business leaders who test their skills at four of Scotlands best courses. These are the Montrose, Gleneagles, Carnoustie Championship and St Andrews Old Course.

Tartan Week Events

Many other events take place surrounding the week of the 6th of April. The main event is the re-enactment by the Arbroath Abbey Pageant Society, of the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath, as well as other important moments from Scottish history. Other events in Arbroath and the surrounding area include a Grand Ceilidh, Taste of Tartan Concert, Street Football, Dine Out With The King Evening, Local Pipe Bands, Declaration of Rock Concert, Highland Dancing, Farmers Market, Tartan Craft Fayre, Haggis Hurling, Tartan 10km Road Race, Skate Jam Competition as well as many more smaller events.

The Funny Side Of Golf

Golfer - I've never played this badly before.
Caddie - You've played before?

Golfer - Will you stop looking at your watch all the time, it's distracting me
Caddie - It's not my watch, it's my compass

Golfer - Do you notice any improvement in me today, caddie?
Caddie - Yes, you've had a haircut

Golfer - Well, caddie, how do you like my game?
Caddie - It's terrific. Mind you, I still prefer golf.

Golfer - "That can't be my ball, caddie. It looks far too old" said the player looking at a ball deep in the trees.
Caddie - "It is a long time since we started, sir."

"Many a golfer prefers a golf cart to a caddie because the cart cannot count, criticise or laugh"

Golfer - You must be the worst caddie in the world
Caddie - I don't think so, that would be too much of a coincidence

---------------------------------------------------------

Moses, Jesus, and another guy were out playing golf one day on the Arbroath Links Golf Course. Moses pulled up to the tee and drove a long one. It landed in the fairway but rolled directly towards the burn. Quickly Moses raised his club, the water parted and it rolled to the other side, safe and sound. Next, Jesus strolled up to the tee and hit a nice long one directly toward the same burn. It landed directly in the center of the burn and kind of hovered over the water. Jesus casually walked out on the burn and chipped it up onto the green.

The third guy got up and sort of randomly whacked the ball. It headed out over the fence and bounced off a tractor and then hit a nearby tree. From there it bounced onto the roof of a nearby van and rolled down the roof, and onto the fairway and right toward the same burn. On the way to the burn, it hit a little stone and bounced out over the water, onto a lilly pad where it rested quietly. Suddenly, a very large frog jumped up on the lilly pad and snatched the ball into his mouth. Just then, a hawk swooped down and grabbed the frog and flew away. As they passes over the green, the frog squealed with fright and dropped the ball, which bounced right into the hole for a beautiful hole in one.

Moses then turned to Jesus and said, "I hate playing with your Dad."

There was this minister who was an avid golfer. Every chance he got, he could be found on the Carnoustie Championship Golf Course swinging away. It was an obsession. One Sunday, it was a perfect day for golfing. The sun was out, with no clouds in the beautiful Angus sky, and the temperature was just right. The urge to play golf overcame him. He called an assistant and told him that he was sick and could not attend church today. With clubs in the boot, he drove 30 miles to the St Andrews Old Course where no one would recognize him. Happily, he began to play the course.

An angel up above was watching the minister and was quite perturbed. He went to God and said, "Look at the minister. He should be punished for what he's doing." God nodded in agreement. The minister teed up on the first hole. He swung, and the ball sailed effortlessly through the air and landed right in the cup three hundred and fifty yards away. A perfect hole in one. The angel was a little shocked. He turned to God and said, "Begging Your pardon, but I thought you were going to punish him.

"God smiled. "Think about it, who can he tell?"

A retiree was given a set of golf clubs by his co-workers. Thinking he'd try the game, he asked the local pro of the Arbroath Golf Club, Lindsay Ewart for lessons, explaining that he knew nothing whatever of the game. Lindsay showed him the perfect stance and swing, then said "Just hit the ball toward the flag on the first green." The novice teed up and smacked the ball straight down the fairway and onto the green, where it stopped inches from the hole. "Now what?", the fellow asked the speechless pro. "Uh... you're supposed to hit the ball into the cup" the pro finally said, after he was able to speak again.

The retiree replied, "Oh great! NOW you tell me!"

A man and his friend are playing golf one day on the Edzell Golf Course. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course. He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes and bows in prayer. His friend says, "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You truly are a kind man."

The man then replies, "Yeah, well we were married 35 years."

A beautiful Angus bride was walking down the aisle of the St Vigeans Church and when she reached the altar the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side. She said: "What are your golf clubs doing here?"

He looked her right in the eye and said, "This isn't going to take all day, is it?"

Two women were having a round on the Arbroath Links. The first of the twosome teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men coming in on the 18th. Indeed, the ball hit one of the men, and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The Angus woman rushed down to the man and immediately began to apologize. She explained that she was a physiotherapist at Liz McColgans Health Centre near Carnoustie "Please allow me to help. I'm a physiotherapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me!", she told him earnestly.

"Ach its OK, I'll be arite...I'll be fine in a few minutes", he replied breathlessly as he remained in the fetal position still clasping his hands together at his crotch. But she persisted, and finally allowed her to help him. She gently took his hands away an laid them to the side, she loosened his pants, and she put her hands inside. She began to massage him. She then asked him: "How does that feel?"

To which he replied: "It feels great, but my thumb still hurts like hell."

After a particularly poor game of golf, a popular club member of the Montrose Golf Club skipped the clubhouse and started to go home. As he was walking to the parking lot to get his car, a Tayside policeman stopped him and asked, "Did you tee off on the sixteenth hole about twenty minutes ago?" "Yes," the golfer responded. "Did you happen to hook your ball so that it went over the trees and off the course?" the policeman asked. "Yes, I did. How did you know?" the golfer asked. "Well," said the policeman very seriously, "Your ball flew out onto the road and crashed through a driver's windshield. The car went out of control, crashing into five other cars and a fire engine. The fire engine couldn't make it to the fire, and the building burned down. So, what are you going to do about it?"

The golfer thought it over carefully and responded, "I think I'll close my stance a little bit, tighten my grip and lower my right thumb."

A couple met at a local B&B in Angus and fell in love. They were discussing how they would continue the relationship after their vacations were over. "It's only fair to warn you, Jody," Bert said, "I'm a golf nut. I live, eat, sleep and breathe golf." "Well, since you're being honest, so will I." Jody said. "I'm a hooker."

"I see." said Bert. "It's probably because you're not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball."

The detective asks, "Sir, do you know this person?" "Yes" he replied. "Did you hit him with that golf club?" "Yes, I did," the man answers. He cries, drops the club and puts his head in his hands. "How many times did you hit him?" said the detective.

The man thought for a moment and said "I dont know... Four, five, six, put me down for a four."
